The Halfpenny Folk Club Newsletter Spring 2009

Hi everyone! This newsletter takes us from early Spring to the 2009 Gower Folk Festival in June and beyond. We have some great folk music evenings planned this Spring and look forward to seeing you there!

Sunday 1st Feb          Damien Barber and Mike Wilson

Two of the finest exponents of traditional song Damien Barber and Mike Wilson between them draw on the influences of Peter Bellamy, Ewan McColl and Mike Waterson along with the standard traditional repertoire. Accompanied by Damien on guitar and concertina and with a large helping of wit, it should be a good start to the year.

Sunday 15th March    Vicki Swan and Jonny Dyer

Vicki and Jonny make a welcome return to the club. Their singing is magical and their accompaniment on guitar, accordion, Scottish smallpipes and Nykelharpa is assured. Expect great tunes and wonderful harmonies.

Sunday 17th April    Tom Kitching and Gren Bartley

Tom Kitching plays fiddle with a unique flair and a broad command of styles. Gren Bartley is simply a superstar of the finger style guitar and is blessed with a restful voice that lulls its way into the mind and heart. Great stuff!

Sunday 17th May    Vin Garbutt

What can we say ? The man’s a super star and anyone who has not heard him before, prepare to laugh till it hurts and be amazed by his impassioned singing and guitar playing. Vin is not afraid to be controversial and is not to be missed.

12th-14th June       Gower Folk Festival

Guests booked so far include Beoga, Chris Newman and Maire Ni Chathasaigh, Mike and Ali Vass, Boldwood, Avant Trois, Wistman’s Wood, Steve Turner, The Foundlings, Ffynnon

Monday 15th June     Post-festival session at the Greyhound Inn 8.00pm-11.00pm

Sunday 28th June      Martin Curtis

This lovely ex-pat Kiwi brings his own songs and stories of bush life with a gentle sense of humour.

The Halfpenny Folk Club is held at the Greyhound Inn, Oldwalls, Llanrhidian, Gower, every Sunday night. It starts at 8.30pm and has guest artists once a month and singer's evenings in between when all are welcome to sing, play or just to listen. Singer's nights are free, there is an entry fee for guest nights.

We also hold a monthly session at the Chapel in Parkmill on the first Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm. This is open to any instrument at any standard and consists of mostly dance tunes from various countries. Anyone is welcome to bring their favourite tunes and we will learn them.
